Leila Robinson Courts closed again

By Kayon Raynor

The managers of Independence Park Limited, IPL,  on Wednesday decided yet again to close the recently renovated Leila Robinson Courts out of an abundance of caution.

General Manager of IPL, Major Desmon Brown, says the decision to close the courts came after reports by Netball Jamaica President Marva Bernard that electric shocks were still occurring.

The closure comes three months after a similar step was taken at the facility which was refurbished at a cost of $35 million.

Bernard, The Netball Jamaica boss, had also indicated that water was pooling under the synthetic courts.  But Terry Montague, the Sports Development Foundation's Chief Engineer, while noting that the courts are constructed with a slope to facilitate a quick run-off of water following rain, says another solution has to be found.

General Manager of the SDF, Denzil Wilks, says a representative of Connor Sport which manufactured the court will arrive in Jamaica shortly as there is a 15 year warranty on the courts' surfaces.

Major Brown has not given an indication when the facility will be re-opened.
