More controversy over Manning Cup playing conditions

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Jordan Forte

There may be more controversy on the horizon for the ISSA schoolboy football season over the time when matches are played. A Norman Manley player had to be lifted off the field during his team's 4-0 defeat to St George’s College in the Manning Cup Competition on Monday.

Severe weather has wreaked havoc on the 2019 season as at least three players have had to be hospitalized after being affected by lightning. Two Jamaica College players were admitted to hospital after suffering the ill-effects of lightning flashes in their first leg first round match against Wolmer's Boys while just last week a Haile Selassie player became the latest victim of a lightning strike.

With several other matches having to be called off because of the effects of the severe weather, the decision was taken by competition organizers ISSA to have the matches played earlier, but that has caused another issue. On Monday, Norman Manley player Shamaro Dennis had to be lifted off the field after suffering the effects of extreme heat experienced during the earlier matches.

In the meantime, many time champions St George’s College remained unbeaten following the result. Captain Nathaniel Campbell scored a double netting just 3 minutes apart with goals in the 34th and 37th minutes. Rochaine Barker had opened the scoring in just 11th minute

Shantamoi Taylor put the icing on the cake for St George’s College with a goal in the 83rd minute. The win sees the “Light Blues” of North Street move to 19 points atop Group 'F', while Norman Manley remain third in the group with 7 points.

Elsewhere, St Jago and Holy Trinity ended 0-0 in another encounter on the day at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
St Jago now moves to 11 points with the result while Holy Trinity are a point better with 12. In other results, Excelsior High recorded a 3-0 win over Cedar Grove Academy, Eltham had a 2-0 win over Ardenne, Calabar and Campion College ended goalless while Hydel got by Meadowbrook with a 4-1 scoreline.

Also on the day, Mona High and Edith Dalton ended 1-1, Camperdown remained perfect with a 1-0 win over Tivoli gardens, St Catherine defeated 3-0 over Papine while Northern Technical had a 3-2 win over Oberlin. St Andrew Technical were also impressive on the day as they blanked Penwood 4-0, Cumberland stopped Clan Carthy 4-1 and Haile Selassie were 2-0 winners over Bridgeport.
