Portmore United beat Waterhouse on penalties to lift RSPL title

Voices of Portmore United's coach Shavar Thomas and Waterhouse's coach Donovan Duckie

Portmore United are the 2017/18 Red Stripe Premier League champions after beating Waterhouse 4-3 on penalties in Monday night’s final at the National Stadium. The teams had played out a 0-0 regulation and extra time draw.

Portmore United scored their first four penalties while Waterhouse missed their first and fifth spot kicks. Meanwhile, despite only one victor emerging, both coaching staffs say they deserved the victory in Monday night's final. Portmore's coach Shavar Thomas the match was just what he expected.

“We were confident all season; from the onset we wanted to dominate. We knew this game was going to be very tight; seeing that Waterhouse play their last couple of games, they sit behind the ball and hope that their front four would create for them. They got their chances; we got ours and in the end we deserved it,” said Thomas.

Meanwhile, although congratulating Portmore United on their victory, Waterhouse's coach Donovan Duckie says his team should have gotten the win.

“We played an exceptionally good game. We were the better team in 90 minutes and extra time by far. Football is a game of moments; we had better moments but we did not score and it hurt us in the penalty shootout. I have to say congratulations to Portmore,” said Duckie. With their sixth hold on the RSPL title, Portmore United also became the team with the most Premier League titles, inching one ahead of Arnett Gardens and Tivoli.

Meanwhile, Arnett Gardens striker Fabian Reid was named the MVP while Craig Foster of Humble Lion won the Golden Boot for being the overall leading scorer with  17 goals.
