Jamaica's Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase champion Aisha Praught-Leer has been named to the IAAF Athletes Commission after the elections took place recently. Praught-Leer who ran in the women's 1500 metres at the just-concluded Championships this month, garnered 438 votes which was enough to be a part of the six selected for the commission.
The Athletes Commission acts as a liaison between athletes and the world governing body, ensuring that they participate in the decision-making process, under reforms approved in December 2016. Praught-Leer joins the likes of Donald Quarrie, Grace Jackson and Michael Frater as Jamaicans who have served on the commission.
America's World Champs gold medallist Bernard Lagat, New Zealand's Olympic champion Valerie Adams and France's Olympic gold medallist Renaud Lavillenie were among the other 5 selected. Nearly two-thirds of the 1833 accredited athletes present in Doha voted in the elections, which took place during the championships in the official team hotels.
