Prize money to be offered at Champs 2017

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Ricardo Chambers

For the first time prize monies will be awarded at the ISSA Grace Kennedy Boy's and Girl's Championships. The announcement was made at the event's launch at the Spanish Court Hotel on Thursday.

ISSA president Dr Walton small says discussions were held last year and a decision was taken to award prize monies in all ISSA sports, whether they are sponsored or not. The winning schools will each get $1 million while the runners-up will each take home $500, 000. The third, fourth and fifth placed teams will also receive cash awards.

Outside of prize monies, all schools will benefit from a $7 million pool, from which Dr Small says they will receive subsidies for travelling, with each school also getting $2500 for every point they score.

In the meantime, Champs tickets will go on sale on the opening day of champs, March 28, a few days later than usual. Chairperson for the Champs committee Colleen Montaque says the decision came down to a matter of cost.

The ISSA Boy's and Girl's Championships will run from March 28 to April 1, with live coverage on TVJ, and on Hitz 92 FM.
