Red Stripe Premier Football League kicks off under a cloud

By Patrick R. Anderson

Despite internal discord between the collective clubs and the Premier League Clubs' Association, PLCA, the long awaited 2014-2015 Red Stripe Premier Football League begins on Sunday with four of the scheduled 5-matches, and doubt surrounding the Monday night fixture between defending champions Montego Bay United and Reno.

Some of the issues which have bothered clubs are the absence of an Annual General Meeting and election of officers of the PLCA; the apparent conflict of interest of Boys' Town's Head Coach Andrew Price who doubles as the paid General Manager of the PLCA; the untimely passing of information to clubs when requested; and the absence of audited financials.

The JFF intervened in the dispute last Friday by calling an emergency meeting involving the stakeholders, which seemed to have calmed the swelling rivers somewhat, but Montego Bay United's principal owner Orville Powell insists his position remains the same of not playing until the issues are adequately addressed.

Powell's Montego Bay United is scheduled to host promoted Reno F.C. at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex in the popular Monday night fixture (Sept 8)  at 9p.m. LIVE on Television Jamaica, TVJ.

In Sunday's matches, Arnett Gardens F.C. tackles Harbour View at the Compound at 3:30p.m. Arnett is laced with newly acquired players Dicoy Williams, Anthowe Dawkins, Jerry Walters, Marvin Morgan and Alonso Adlam, giving every indication they will challenge for the title this season.

Humble Lions with the dangerous striker Devon Hodges now among its ranks, hosts Tivoli Gardens at the Effortville playfield at 6:30p.m.; Rivoli United opposes Cavalier at the Bramwell Clarke Complex at 4p.m. ; while Boys' Town faces Sporting Central Academy at 3:30p.m. at the Juici  Complex.  Sporting's Francois Swaby, goalkeeper Allien Whittaker, Camaal Reid and Linval Lewis are expected to keep the red brigade at bay.

The Waterhouse vs Barbican fixture has been postponed due to Waterhouse having five players in the national team which travelled on Sunday to Canada for a friendly international on Tuesday September 9 at 6;30p.m. Jamaica time. The Jamaica vs Canada match will be shown LIVE on TVJ Sports Network.
