The Kingston Hummingbirds suffered a major dent in their bid for a semi-final spot while the St. Ann Orchids secured their 5th win, as action continued in the Berger Elite Netball League on Monday.
Knowing that a victory over the Under-21 Suns would virtually clinch a spot in the semi-final round, the Hummingbirds were beaten 30-27 in a low scoring encounter.
The Hummingbirds entered the 4th quarter leading 21-16 but couldn't withstand the pressure from the Under 21's and were outscored 14-6 in the final quarter. It was the third win for the Under 21's who now move a step closer to a semi-final berth.
Meanwhile, the St Ann Orchids blew away the challenge of the Manchester Spurs, 49-35 to join the St Catherine Racers as the first two teams to qualify for the last four. The combined effort of Simone Forbes and Sabrina Spence proved too strong for the Connie Francis-coached girls.
The Orchids led from start to finish, and despite a minor hiccup in the second quarter the result was never in doubt.
Spence scored 31 goals from 39 attempts while Forbes who has been having a good season since returning to the local circuit scored 18 goals from 21 attempts.
