Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Senior Sports Reporter Kayon Raynor

The presidents of at least two sporting associations are chomping at the bit to start instituting steps to earn from their intellectual property rights, after lessons learnt during the two-day IP and Sports Conference organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports and the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office.

From assisting athletes with leveraging their personal brands to engaging media houses in partnerships to generate income from broadcast and media rights, the president of the Jamaica Boxing Board, Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones, and Billy Wilmot who leads the Jamaica Surfing Association, are ready to take full advantage of lessons learnt at the conference which ended on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Rashid Hall, a Jamaican working with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and who presented on the use of athletes as brand ambassadors, agrees it’s full time the majority of Jamaican athletes start reaping the  benefits from their IP rights.

Meanwhile, Gary Allen, the CEO of the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, who presented on broadcast piracy and effects on the Caribbean, believes media regulators need to institute the required legal framework to protect owners of broadcast rights who spend millions of dollars to acquire same.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries which has portfolio responsibility for the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office, estimates that Jamaica loses about US $20 billion of economic value of brand Jamaica annually  outside of sports.
