Sri Lanka wins World T20 Championship

Sri Lanka's cricketers broke a long championships drought on Sunday, defeating India by six wickets to win the men's version of the World T20 tournament.

India batted first and made 130/4. Virat Kohli was the top scorer for the Indians with 77, but the innings never got the momentun it needed to post a commanding target for the Sri Lankans.Of the five players who batted during the allotted 20 overs, only two - Kohli (132.75) and Rohit Sharma (111.53) - had a strike rate of more than 100.

When the Sri Lankans batted, they made the chase comfortable, achieving the target in 17.5 overs. Appropriately, it was the team's two premier batsmen - Kumar Sangakara (52) and Mahela Jayawardene (24) - who top scored, in their final T20 International.

Since winning the 1996 World Cup in the 50 overs verion of the game, Sri Lanka had lost four other finals (50 overs and 20/20), the last of these coming in the 2012 T20 Championship, which the West Indies won.
