Sunshine Girls make winning start at Vitality Netball Nations Cup

The Sunshine Girls gave returning head coach Connie Francis the perfect start with a 59-54 win over South Africa in their opening game of the Vitality Nations Cup in Nottingham, England on Sunday. Following the debacle at last year's Netball World Cup, the Sunshine Girls are hoping to restore pride with a dominant performance in the Quad Series which also includes England and New Zealand.

On Sunday, the Jamaicans were brilliant in most areas of the game, showing they had put the past few months of controversy on and off the court behind them. They dominated the South African team which showed little spark.

The Sunshine girls led all quarters and though South Africa pulled back the third quarter 12 goal deficit, they were never matching strides and in the end as the Jamaicans carved out a 5 goal win. Vice-Captain Nicole Dixon was adjudged the game's MVP.

In the day's opener, world champions New Zealand defeated England 64-48. The competition now moves to Birmingham for the second match day on Wednesday when Jamaica will face New Zealand and England meet South Africa.
