Supreme Soul defies top weight to land Governor's Cup

Commentary by Track Announcer Brian Rickman

The 4-5 favourite Supreme Soul shouldered top weight of 126 pounds to good effect by landing the 79th running of the Governor's Cup over 10 furlongs at Caymanas Park on Saturday, the last major prep for next month's Jamaica Derby. The 3 year old chestnut colt who won last month's 2000 Guineas, was once again ridden to victory by 2-time former champion jockey Shane Ellis for leading trainer Anthony "Baba" Nunes as he came off the pace to beat Sentient by three-quarters of a length.

The win closed a double for Ellis while there were also two wins for leading rider Christopher Mamdeen and champion jockey Anthony Thomas. Inform trainer Gary Subratie also had a double on the 10-race card. Racing continues next Saturday.
