Under-17 basketballers lose at Centro tournament

Jamaica's Under-17 basketballers lost 61-69 to the US Virgin Islands in their opening game of the Centro tournament in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. The young Jamaicans trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter 18-19 but a big second quarter performance from the USVI who outscored Jamaica 23-10, would see them move ahead 32-28 at the half time break.

The Jamaicans staged a strong fight-back in the second half, outscoring the USVI 10-9 in the third quarter and 23-18 in the final but their opponents would hang on for the victory. Samora Williams led the Jamaicans with 16 points while team-mate Kareem Reid supported with 11 points.

The young Jamaicans will play Panama in their second match on Thursday before facing home team Dominican Republic on Friday.
