The governing body for athletics in the United States, USA Track and Field, has called for this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo to be delayed because of the ongoing Covid 19 coronavirus outbreak. The federation has requested that the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee advocate to the International Olympic Committee for the postponement of the Games.
The request was made on Friday in a letter written by USATF CEO Max Siegel to the CEO of the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee. The letter said in part: “The right and responsible thing to do is to prioritize everyone's health and safety, and appropriately recognize the toll this difficult situation has, and continues to take on our athletes and their Olympic Games preparations."
It follows a request from USA Swimming for the Games to be delayed by 12 months. The Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9. Four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson fears athletes could "risk their lives" trying to train for the Games and called for clarity on the IOC's decision-making process.
