Victory for Bloomfield at Diamond League debut

A meet record run by Akeem Bloomfield in the men's 400m,highlighted one of two Jamaican victories at Friday's Rabat Diamond League Meet in Morroco. In what was his Diamond League debut, Bloomfield raced to a new meet record time of 44.33 seconds to erase the previous mark of 44.66 set by American Lashawn Merritt, in landing the men's 400m.

Qatar's Abdalleleh Haroun was second in 44.69 while Great Britian's Matthew Hudson-Smith took third in 44.79 seconds. Meanwhile, national record holder and Commonwealth bronze medallist Natoya Goule crossed the line in 1 minute, 58:33 for second in the women's 800m. The event was won by Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi in 1 minute, 57:90.

Commonwealth Games finalist Tajay Gayle cut the sand at 8.09 meters to capture the men's long jump which was a non-Diamond League event. Another good showing in the pit for Jamaica came from Commonwealth gold medallist Kimberly Williams with 14.47 meters for second in the women's triple jump. Colombia's Catherine Ibarguen registered a world-leading and meet record jump of 14.96 meters.

Elsewhere on the day, national record holder and Commonwealth Games champion Daniel Thomas-Dodd was left disappointed only managing 18.04m for 8th in the women's shot put. In the women's sprint hurdles, Yanique Thompson was 8th in 12.93 seconds. Shashalee Forbes crossed the line 8th in 23.51 in the women's 200m. The next stop in the Diamond League Series will be in Monaco next Friday.
