R. Kelly facing bribery charge over marriage to Aaliyah in 1994

R. Kelly has been charged with bribing a government official to get a fraudulent identification document to marry an under-age girl in 1994.

The girl, named only as Jane Doe in the documents, has widely been identified by US media as singer Aaliyah.

They got married when she was 15 years old and R. Kelly was 27.

The certificate, leaked at the time, listed her age as 18.

R. Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, is accused of paying a bribe to an unnamed Illinois government employee to obtain a fake ID.

Their marriage was annulled months later because the teenager, whose full name was Aaliyah Dana Haughton, was under age.

Sex abuse trial

Meanwhile, a  Cook County judge has set a September 14, 2020 trial date for R. Kelly, who is charged in four sexual abuse cases.

Cook County prosecutors in March became the first jurisdiction to file charges against the R&B singer, who is accused of sexually abusing the women.

Three of them were underage girls at the time of the alleged attacks.

The singer was subsequently charged with similar acts in federal courts in Chicago, New York and Minnesota.

Kelly is expected to stand trial in May in federal court in New York while a federal judge in Chicago set an April 27 date for Kelly to stand trial.
