Digicel announces huge jump in subscribers

Telecommunications company, Digicel, has announced a 150 per cent growth in subscribers on its 4th generation network, using mobile data, in the last year.

The disclosure was made by Barry O'Brien, CEO of Digicel, who said on Wednesday that the growth had pushed the company to invest billions of dollars more in its network.

He said the growth had been pushed by platforms such as Whatsapp, Skype and Facebook, which consumers are turning to for communications instead of traditional voice and texting.

He added that the growth had also been pushed by the company's move to enable mass market usage of mobile data by developing its own brand of smart phones.

Since that development last year, Digicel has reportedly sold 60 thousand units of the devices.
