JUTC to switch from diesel to LNG

In a bid to reduce its fuel bill, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is to embark on a pilot programme with New Fortress to switch from diesel to LNG.

Transport Minister Mike Henry said the pilot will begin within the first quarter of next year and will see five new LNG buses in operation.

Speaking at a media briefing Friday morning, Mr. Henry said the JUTC will thereafter take steps to retrofit buses up to six years old over time.

This is estimated to bring about a 28 per cent reduction in JUTC's fuel bill.

He added that this will by and large, reduce carbon emissions by four per cent or some 2,820 tonnes per year.

Portmore Hub

Meanwhile, the JUTC will be establishing the long awaited Portmore Hub.

Transport Minister Mike Henry said this will enable the JUTC to better schedule its service and provide an even timelier rollout.

He added that the changes will go a far way in improving not just the JUTC's service but also its operations.
