PM questions Petrojam's relevance

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has questioned the relevance of the State-owned oil refinery, Petrojam.

The issue was raised on Wednesday at a media briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mr. Holness suggested that Petrojam has outlived the era for which it was initially established in terms of its production of heavy fuel oil.

He pointed out that as the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) moves towards more environmentally friendly solutions, Petrojam stands to lose one of its major buyers.

Mr. Holness also argued that the move towards electric vehicles on the international scene signals that the world is moving away from heavy fuel oil.

The Prime Minister pointed that, going forward, Jamaica could start getting refined fuel from overseas suppliers.
