Sweet River Abattoir reports improved performance

Sweet River Abattoir has confirmed that its performance has improved, despite fierce competition in the meat market.

Against that background, the company has declared that it is now ready to reap the benefits of its feed programme and networking of farmers, in time for heightened demand for its products this Christmas.

Sweet River reported profit amounting to $587,000 in the three months to the end of September. Last year it recorded $2 million in losses during the corresponding period.

It said the better performance came as pig production improved, though normal levels of  production are not expected until the second half of next year.

The company has disclosed that it is having discussions with sheep and goat farmers who are expressing interest in growing animals on a contractual basis to ensure constant supply.
