15% increase in wage subsidy for early childhood teachers this year - Thwaites

The Government of Jamaica will be increasing the wage subsidy to teachers in early childhood institutions by 15 per cent this year.

This was announced by Education Minister Ronald Thwaites during his contribution to the Budget Debate in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon.

While pointing out that most early childhood practitioners are employed to private or non-government organizations, Reverend Thwaites said the increased subsidy was being granted "in recognition of the
invaluable contribution of these practitioners to the sector and to student development..." It is hoped that the subsidy will again be increased next financial year, he added.

Stressing that the Ministry of Education wants "our best teachers and practitioners to stay in the Early Childhood system," he announced that 200 trained teachers will be engaged through the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP). An additional 40 will be employed to provide coaching and teaching support to 480 schools, the Minister disclosed.

The aim of the Ministry is to have one trained teacher available, at least part-time, to each early childhood institution in the country was close to being realised, he declared.
