The Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) has responded to claims by the Ministry of Transport that there is a shortage of coins in circulation.
A source at the BoJ says the bank is not aware of a shortage.
The source says what appears to be happening is that persons are inadvertently hoarding coins at home.
The source said an official response will come from the BoJ later today.
It was also reported to RJR News that the Portmore branch of a popular supermarket chain had a sign up on Thursday, requesting that persons come in with $5, $10 and $20 coins as there was a shortage.
In a release Thursday night, Transport Minister Mike Henry said a shortage of coins had resulted in interim toll rate changes on a segment of the North South Highway.
He said the operators of the highway indicated in a meeting on Wednesday that coins in their possession will be exhausted by today.
