British Parliament to debate Windrush matter on April 30

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

The British Parliament is to debate the Windrush issue on April 30 following a successful petition launched on the matter.

The Parliament considers all petitions that get more than 100,000 signatures.

The petition calling for an amnesty for all Windrush children has garnered more than 160,000 signatures so far.

David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, has asked the UK Home Office to review all Windrush cases since 2014 to ensure no wrongful detentions have taken place.

He has urged persons in the Caribbean who know anyone who has been deported to the Caribbean from the UK to contact him.

Mr. Lammy noted that 901 of the 12,056 deportations from the UK in 2015, were over 50 years of age.

Three hundred and three were deported to Jamaica.

Favourable resolution

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said the fact that Jamaica still has the Queen as its Head of State requires that the United Kingdom favourably resolve the Windrush generation immigration issue.

Mr. Holness was speaking at a reception at the Jamaican High Commission in London on Tuesday.

Mr. Holness said he was satisfied with the response of the UK government so far.

"It shows the spirit of the Commonwealth and as a realm member of the Commonwealth, meaning a country that still has the Queen as the Head of State, it is important that the United Kingdom shows how much it values the people who still hold the Queen as their head of state," he suggested.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, on Tuesday declared that no member of the Windrush Generation will be deported from Britain.

She gave the commitment during a meeting with 12 Caribbean heads of government at Downing Street, where she also apologised for the treatment of the British residents.
