Broadcasting Commission issues warning

Executive Director of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica Cordel Green, has warned that criminal sanctions appear imminent for persons or entities who are selling specialised boxes which can be used to access content broadcasted from overseas.
He warns that the Commission does not regulate these entities, and the police will be dealing with them.

The boxes facilitate the users accessing this content on their computers.
The issue is that the owners of the content being broadcast through the boxes, are notcompensated by the local entities selling the boxes.
Green,  who says the situation is fairly common, is also pushing for urgent legislative changes, to catch up with temerging technology to facilitate adequate regulation, and fair competition.

On Friday, the Broadcasting Commission announced that subscribers to cable television iwill see their viewing options reduced by the end of next month.

The Commission has ordered the removal of 19 channels, due to copyright breaches.

The channels to be removed, in the first instance, are Encore Black, Showtime East, Encore Family, Showtime West, Encore Love, Showtime TOO, Encore Suspense, Showtime 2, Encore WAM, Showtime Showcase, Encore Classic, Starz Comedy, Encore Drama, Starz West, Encore Mystery, Starz Kids & Family, Encore Movie Plex, Starz Multiplex, and the Movie Channel Xtra.
