Bullying, lack of guidance identified as issues at Irwin High School

Education Minister Fayval Williams

The Education Ministry and the security forces have identified bullying and a lack of guidance among the student population as a driving force of violence at Irwin High School in St. James.

This comes following last week's fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Raniel Plummer, outside the school gate.

Speaking with the media during a visit to the institution on Tuesday morning, Minister Williams said frustration has led to violent encounters among the school population.

"They are just growing up, they haven't learned yet how to fully manage their emotions, they need to speak with someone, they need to speak out about what's happening to them and, just by their response this morning, that is a gap that we need to act on at the Ministry. Yes, they have guidance counsellors here. Yes, they have teachers, dean of discipline and others, but their response tells us that there's need for more listening to happen at this school," the minister suggested.

In the meantime, Commanding Officer for the St. James Police division, Superintendent Eron Samuels said more students are to be questioned in connection with the incident.

A 14-year-old student is in custody facing a charge of murder.

Superintendent Eron Samuels said charges will be laid shortly.

The police and representatives from the Ministry of Education on Tuesday provided support to teachers and students at Irwin High.
