Clean up operations have begun at the Tacky High School in the eastern parish of St. Mary following a fire that damaged several sections of the institution on Monday
Principal of the school, Errol Basco said parents, past students, teachers and community members assisted in the clean up exercise on Tuesday morning.
He added that the extent of the damage has surpassed his original estimates.
“When we looked at a bird’s eye view at the damage I erroneously said it was roughly J$5 million, the damage that I’m looking at definitely exceeds J$15 million,” he said.
He said the institution is still without electricity and therefore only students sitting external exams that do not require power should attend school.
For exams that require electricity, students will have to journey to Guys Hill High School to sit those exams.
The fire was reportedly set by men who attempted to rob the school's vault.
