CMU council urged to resign

The entire Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) council is facing a call to immediately resign in the wake of the findings contained in an Auditor General report.

The report has not been tabled in Parliament, however, aspects of the document have revealed rampant financial, procurement and human resource breaches.

The Sunday Gleaner reported yesterday that businessman Roger Hinds has confirmed his resignation from the council, which oversees operations at the CMU.

Political commentator Shalman Scott says, while the public is not "anxious to try anybody and to arrive at any final conclusion," it is wise for the other council members to resign, especially if they believe they have done nothing wrong, to allow for a thorough investigation.

The report from the Auditor General's Department has outlined unsupported payments totalling J$332.9 million and US$293,445.

It also stated that weak financial controls allowed for the improper transfer of J$145 million from the CMU's bank account to a trust fund with no accountability for how the money was later spent.

In addition, the report highlighted procurement breaches amounting to more than J$217.7 million and almost US$1 million.

Criminal charges have been laid against CMU president Professor Fritz Pinnock and former education minister Ruel Reid in relation to some of the irregularities at the university.
