Cop chopped in the face to undergo facial reconstruction surgery

Corporal Arlene McBean and Superintendent Wayne Cameron

The Police Federation says the cop, who was chopped in the face in Christiana, Manchester on Tuesday, will have to undergo facial reconstruction surgery.

He was attacked by a man said to be mentally ill.

In an interview with RJR News Wednesday morning, Corporal Arlene McBean, who is in charge of Public Relations at the Federation, said the policeman will undergo an assessment on Wednesday in preparation for surgery.

"The injury is very serious and it has caused deformity on the nose especially. The facial reconstruction specialist now will have to see what can be done, what magic can be worked to put back this policeman in a state where he can be comfortable with how he looks," she asserted.

Corporal McBean has urged members of the public to desist from circulating videos and photographs of the incident.

A bystander who was also shot during the incident, has been admitted to hospital in stable condition.

The attacker, who sustained a bullet wound to his leg, was subsequently taken into custody.

Mentally ill on streets

In the meantime, the Police Federation is calling for the government to swiftly deal with the issue of mentally ill persons on the nation's streets.

Earlier this month, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, said some of the recommendations made in a report by the Mental Health and Homelessness Task Force will be implemented this fiscal year.

The report, received by the minister in 2016, examines the current status of mental illness in the society, existing methods and techniques of treatment, and proposes new approaches to tackling the ailment.
