Coronavirus now confirmed in three Caribbean states

More reports of the coronavirus have emerged in the Caribbean with St. Maarten and St. Barts joining the Dominican Republic in recording cases.

This has prompted Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, to express concern about the region's capacity to deal with an outbreak of the virus.

During a video conference on Sunday Dr. Etienne reported that there are three cases in the Dominican Republic, two in St. Maarten and one in St. Barts.

As a result of the confirmed cases in the Caribbean, the number of countries with the coronavirus has increased to 60.

The video conference with the PAHO Director followed a special meeting hosted by Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados and Chairman of CARICOM, to discuss ways of protecting the region from the coronavirus.

Dr. Etienne said several countries in the Caribbean have the capacity to test for the virus. These include Jamaica, Barbados, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Belize, Bahamas as well as Haiti.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness will convene a meeting with the National Disaster Committee this week to discuss and approve a plan of action developed by the Ministry of Health to bolster Jamaica's preparedness to deal with the coronavirus.
