Court to hear Opposition Leader's appeal on March 16

The Jamaican Court of Appeal has set March 16 as the date for hearing the matter filed by Opposition Leader Andrew Holness in the Senate seat controversy.

This decision, in keeping with the request for a speedy hearing of the matter, was given by the court this morning.

This followed an application on Tuesday by the parties to the President of  the Appeal Court, Justice Seymour Panton.

As a result of  the decision, the lawyers representing the Clerk to the Houses of  Parliament are now deciding whether to withdraw the claim filed last week.

Queen's Counsel Michael Hylton, who is representing the Clerk, is expected to tell the Supreme Court this afternoon whether he will withdraw the claim.

The Senate applied to the Supreme Court to give a definitive ruling whether Nigel Clarke and Ruel Reid who replaced Arthur Williams and Dr. Christopher Tufton, retained their status as Senators.

Mr. Hylton was hoping that this matter would have been settled before the Court of  Appeal hearing.
