Ebola crisis in DR Congo declared global health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a public health emergency of international concern.

The move should lead to more international support to help tackle the disease.

The outbreak in the DRC has killed more than 1,600 people.

This week, the first case was detected in the city of Goma, which is home to more than a million people.

Declaring a Public Health Emergency of International Concern is one of the most important acts the WHO can take.
