Economist sees good prospects for Morant Bay Urban Centre, if done right

Developmental Economist Dr. Chris Stokes is encouraging new entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities that will be available with the completion of the Morant Bay Urban Centre in St Thomas later this year.

Among the entities that will be occupying the urban centre are the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation, St. Thomas Parish Court, and all other government agencies located in Morant Bay.

But several private-sector entities, including banks, business process outsourcing (BPO) companies and quick-service businesses, will also take up space at the facility.

Dr. Stokes, speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, said it was important for this new development to provide opportunities for value-added growth.

In that regard, he said new start-ups have the chance to grow their businesses from the potential new customers at the urban centre, and beyond, observing as well that there's potential for existing businesses and services to also take advantage of the new markets being created.

Dr Stokes was responding to Lyttleton Shirley, Chairman of the Board of Factories Corporation of Jamaica, who was providing details concerning the the new urban centre in St. Thomas.

It is being developed on the property that once housed the Goodyear tyre factory.

That factory was closed in 1997, leaving a significant void in the economy of the eastern Jamaica parish.

Mr Shirley said the Morant Bay Urban Centre, set for completion in September, is being organized to ensure that business opportunities there are fair is fair remain competitive for all participating enterprises.
