Education Minister promises teachers fair wage deal

Ruel Reid

Education Minister Ruel Reid is assuring Government-paid teachers that he will intervene to ensure they receive a fair wage deal.

The minister gave the assurance on Wednesday when he addressed the final day of the Jamaica Teachers' Association's 53rd annual conference in St. James.

He stated that he has intervened in wage negotiations in the past and will continue to do so as Education Minister.

Senator Reid, who served as JTA President from 2005 to 2006, told the teachers that he will continue to support their call for increased wages and to facilitate whatever is best for the teaching profession.

"While I don't have official responsibility for the negotiation, whenever I am called upon to intervene, you know your minister will intervene and I will look always out for the best interest, the opportunities that exist within all the constraints, as long as it is within my capacity," he told the educators.

The JTA on Tuesday rejected the Government's initial wage offer.
