Arrangements are being made by the Portmore Municipal Council for the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ), to oversee next week's selection of a Deputy Mayor.
Arrangements are also being made for the swearing in of two Portmore Councilors.
In a statement on Tuesday, Acting Mayor Leon Thomas said the decision to get the EOJ to oversee the selection at a special sitting of the Council is in keeping with democratic principles.
The Council consists of nine Councilors representing the People’s National Party (PNP) and opposition Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) representative – the Councilor for the Independence City Division Keith Blake.
The selection of a Deputy Mayor is to coincide with the swearing in of Councilor for the Portmore Pines Division Claude Hamilton and Councilor for the Greater Portmore North Division, Michael Edwards.
The swearing in of both men will result in the PNP increasing its majority to eleven.
PNP insiders say Councilor for the Greater Portmore East Division Yvonne McCormack and Alric Campbell of the Edgewater Division are front runners for the post of Deputy Mayor.
However, it's understood that Campbell will be given the nod.
In the meantime, Thomas has sought to assure constituents of the Greater Portmore North and Portmore Pines Divisions that arrangements have been made for both Councilors to commence duties before the end of this month.
The men were unable to take up their seats due to boundary changes ahead of the December 2011 General Election.
