Government to decide on police involvement in Petrojam probe

Dr. Horace Chang

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has reacted to the call for the police to probe certain activities at state-run oil refinery Petrojam, which is at the centre of controversy.

He told RJR News Thursday that Cabinet is awaiting a report from the Permanent Secretary in the Energy Ministry before a decision is made whether the Major Organised Crime and Anti-corruption Taskforce (MOCA) will investigate corruption allegations at Petrojam.

The Parliamentary Opposition has been calling for MOCA to help investigate breaches at the oil refinery.

Asked Thursday afternoon whether he supports the call, Dr. Chang said he could not give his opinion until he receives the decision from Cabinet.

However, he said as General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, he is of the view that the government has been dealing adequately with the issues plaguing Petrojam.

There has been public outrage about millions paid by Petrojam to two firms under questionable circumstances, cost overuns for a construction project, millions in donations and the high staff  turnover.
