Government welcomes decision to invite independent pathologist

The Government has reacted to news that an independent pathologist has been retained to oversee today's autopsy on the body of  Mario Deane who died after being beaten while in police custody. Justice Minister Senator Mark Golding has welcomed the decision.

He says his Ministry has been in touch with Mr. Deane's family and is awaiting the results of  the autopsy. Senator Golding says any help the family can get is great. US pathologist Dr Michael Baden arrived in the island yesterday to conduct the autopsy.

Mr. Deane died in hospital last month after being beaten at the Barnett Street police Lock-Up in Montego Bay, St James. Two prisoners have been charged with the murder.

And the legal team representing Mario Deane's family says it continues to face roadblocks in obtaining additional information from the authorities regarding the probe into his death. US Attorney, Jasmine Rand, made the revelation during yesterday's press conference organised by lead attorney Miguel Lorne.

Miss Rand outlined the difficulties being experienced saying there was need for more transparency and clarity. According to Miss Rand, the difficulties being experienced by the team are not unique to Jamaica.

Mr. Lorne recently complained of  not being granted a request to inspect the Barnett Street lock-up where Mr. Deane was reportedly beaten by fellow inmates.
