Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith says significant progress has been made in establishing the transitional presidential council for Haiti.

The decree naming the members of the council was published on Tuesday in Le Moniteur, Haiti's official journal.

Minister Johnson Smith says the transitional council for the crisis-stricken CARICOM nation has encountered several issues throughout the process.

"There are still some issues that are being sorted out in terms of the content of the decree, but it has included the criteria that had been agreed in the outcome declaration of March 11th and does set the way for the next procedural steps," she acknowledged in an update during Wednesday morning's post-Cabinet press briefing.

A political accord for the council has also been established.

The accord sets a framework for how the council will function and provides clarity on internal voting and others areas of importance.

Minister Johnson Smith said training and operations for the Multinational Security Support Mission are also progressing well.

The MSS, which is funded primarily by the United States, consists of 50 troops from Belize, 59 from the Bahamas as well as members of the Jamaica Defence Force.
