Hampton School Board disagrees with leave request for principal

The Board of the Hampton School in St. Elizabeth is refuting a claim by Education Minister Ruel Reid regarding the principal, Heather Murray, going on two weeks leave.

The Education Minister had said that Mrs Murray would proceed on two weeks leave, effective January 9. The School Board has written to Senator Reid, stating that the proposal was his and it was not endorsed by Hampton's administration.

The Hampton Board, which is chaired by Trevor Blake, stated that, were Mrs Murray to proceed on leave, serious legal concerns would arise.

Senator Reid last week told RJR's Hotline that Mrs. Murray was granted special leave by agreement of all parties to allow her to complete her report to the Hampton Board.

But the board has asserted that Mrs Murray's withdrawal from the school at this time would be harmful as some students are doing external examinations. It stated that, in all the circumstances, even though she may have acted inappropriately, it did not find any evidence of professional misconduct.

Minister Reid has not yet commented on the board's latest position.

Mrs Murray has been under pressure over her appearance at the bail hearing for Reverend Rupert Clarke who is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The Hampton Board promised to supply the Education Ministry with the requested reports by February 3.
