Hire more social workers to help tackle crime problem, says Morris

Senator Floyd Morris

Opposition Senator Floyd Morris has said the Government must hire more social workers and not just focus on States of Public Emergency, if it is serious about tackling the country's crime problem.

Speaking in the Upper House on Thursday, Senator Morris said domestic violence is a major contributing factor to murders in Jamaica.

He argued that the security forces are not trained to deal with domestic violence and related issues in volatile communities, therefore, "social workers are the ones...who would be able to be in those communities, to speak with individuals and to give them guidance, give them counselling."

Senator Morris pointed out that if the government could afford to give away more than $11 billion in taxes last year, it can afford to hire at least 200 more social workers to help address issues within the country.
