Holness gives go-ahead for measures to reduce crashes in hot spots

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has given instructions to the National Works Agency (NWA) to implement safety measures to reduce accidents in crash hot spots.

Delivering his Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Mr. Holness said the National Road Safety Council has been examining Geographic Information Systems data which have highlighted high probability crash spots.

He outlined other measures which will further empower the Highway and Traffic Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Island Traffic Authority (ITA).

"We have given a policy nod to the use of electronic monitoring, electronic surveillance, and ticketing systems and the NWA is now testing various systems to see which is the best to deploy," he told Parliament.

The measures, he believes, will improve enforcement and reduce road fatalities.
