It's still safe to send children to school, says Grange Hill High chairman

Samuel Williams, Chairman of Grange Hill High School

Chairman of Grange Hill High School, Samuel Williams, is urging calm and is assuring concerned parents that it's still safe to send their children to the school.

His assurance comes despite Thursday's deadly gun attack which claimed the life of 16-year-old student Carson Barrett.

Carson was shot and killed while walking home from school with a female schoolmate, who was also injured in the incident.

Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

On Friday, Mr. Williams insisted that the school campus is secure and has been incident-free.

"Whatever is happening around the environment, it does not really impact the school in our space. The school compound itself, it's safe," he said.

"I want to say to the communities that surround the school, that the school is still a safe haven for your student. And to parents, send your children to school. We are stepping up with our security and the JCF and the supporting security teams are here," the chairman reiterated.

Principal of Trevine Donaldson-Lawrence said the school is trying to cope with the shooting of the two students after they left a fun day event at the institution.

Following Thursday's fatal shooting, students and staff at the institution will be engaged in counselling sessions on Monday to assist in dealing with the trauma from the violence in the community.

The police say Carson Barrett, who was killed, was the target of the attack.

They say ongoing gang conflict between the Kings Valley gang and the Ants Posse gang is behind the shooting.

Superintendent Othniel Dobson, Commanding Officer for the Westmoreland Police, said the security forces will be maintaining a presence in Grange Hill.
