Jamaica Fire Brigade to receive additional resources

The Jamaica Fire Brigade is to receive additional resources. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, made the announcement following concerns about about the ability of the Brigade to adequately respond to recent fires.

speaking recently at a special meeting of the Trelawny Parish Council, Mr. McKenzie announced that the Brigade was in need of $17 million which his ministry has since provided.

"They are well advanced, (with) not just fire boats, but also fire fighting apparatus, a number of fire trucks and water trucks," the minister said.

Opposition Spokesman on Local Government Noel Arscott, over the weekend, criticized the government for failing to ensure that a functioning fire truck is always at the Old Harbour Fire Station.

Mr. Arscott made the call after fire fighters stationed at the Old Harbour Fire Station were unable to respond to a fire at the Old Harbour Market and a vehicular crash on the P.J. Patterson Highway in St. Catherine last week.
