JPS settles electricity bill dispute with retired employees

NWU General Secretary Granville Valentine and JPS Public Relations Manager Audrey Williams

A settlement has been reached in the dispute between the National Workers Union (NWU) and the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) over the decision to discontinue the 50 per cent discount on electricity bills for persons who retired from the utility provider.

NWU General Secretary Granville Valentine said the JPS has decided to reinstate the benefit that had been taken away on July 1, 2018. Retroactive payments will be made to the former employees for the period the benefit had been discontinued.

He said the company has about 300 retirees.

The JPS has, however, said the policy will end with the existing pensioners.
