Manufacturers, distributors won't get unfair advantage from plastics ban - Samuda

Government Senator Matthew Samuda has assured there will be no unfair advantages for manufacturers and distributors under the impending ban on single use plastic.

The ban will take effect on January 1.

Senator Samuda said the plastic ban will be implemented through a Ministerial Order under the Trade Act.

Under the Act, 24x24 inch plastic bags, plastic drinking straws, and imported expanded polystyrene will not be allowed for manufacture, distribution and importation by any Jamaican company.

Senator Samuda said the Ministerial Order will allow the Government to reinforce the ban within the business community, rather than target individuals.

He says no tax incentives or concessions will be offered by the Government under the plastic ban.

Breaches of the  ban could result in fines of up to $2 million or imprisonment for a maximum of two years.

Senator Samuda was speaking recently at a sensitization session hosted by the National Consumers' League, in association with the National Environment and Planning Agency at the Bureau of Standards.
