More proposals made to deal with domestic violence

Psychologist Dr. Christopher Charles

More proposals have been presented to strengthen mechanisms in place to deal with domestic violence.

Psychologist Dr. Christopher Charles has recommended changes ranging from more training for religious leaders, to better flow of  information to the public.

His comments come amid recent deaths resulting from domestic violence.

Dr. Charles argues that resources are limited but there are better ways to deal with the situations before they escalate into murder.

"We need to have a directory of referral services. I mean referral services are available but not in a structured way where someone knows that this is happening and I see the signs and I can call this number," he asserted.

Dr. Charles has suggested that sensitization material and information on domestic violence could be tied to services accessed by members of the public as well as persons who receive weapons as part of their profession.

"For example, if you're going to renew your firearm licence, one requirement should be at least a one hour domestic violence workshop. If you're at police training school or at New Castle where they train incoming members of the JDF, you can incorporate domestic violence issues there about the causes, the problems, the outcomes, how these things need to be addressed, what do you need to do if any situation and so on," he recommended.
