Clifton Grant, First Vice-President, University and Allied Workers Union
News has emerged that more workers have been laid off from the Monymusk Sugar Estate in Clarendon while the period of dislocation has been extended.
RJR News reported late last month that the decision was made to lay-off more than 250 workers for two weeks.
Trade unions have now been informed that there is more bad news for the workers. First Vice President of the University and Allied Workers Union, Clifton Grant, said plans for more lay-offs at Monymusk were outlined at a meeting. He explained that an additional 250 will be released.
Mr. Grant told RJR News that there has been no response from the Ministry of Agriculture to a request for a meeting to discuss recent developments in the sugar industry.
