Newborn stolen from university hospital found

The newborn who was reportedly stolen from the University Hospital of the West Indies on Friday morning has been found.

The child was found in Rollington Town in East Kingston about 5:30 p.m. A woman has been taken into custody.

Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the JCF's communication unit, said the baby will now be examined.

A section of the University Hospital was shut down earlier in the day as cops searched for the missing child. Information received by RJR News is that the child was taken from Ward Eleven.

According to the child's father, Milton Maxwell, the newborn was asleep in a cot next to the mother. Nurses had administered pain medication to the woman, resulting in her becoming drowsy. When she awoke, the child was missing.

An investigation is ongoing.

RJR News understand both parents are employees at the hospital.

Hospital statement

On Friday afternoon before the child had been found, James Moss-Solomon, Chairman of the Board of the University Hospital, issued a statement on the matter.

He confirmed that the child was last seen in the cot adjacent to the mother’s bed earlier in the morning.

The statement said persons in the ward during the morning have been identified as: nurses on duty as well as doctors and other medical staff who were making clinical rounds.

Mr. Moss-Solomon said visiting hours had not yet commenced at the time the infant went missing. However, he said the mother was visited by an individual who was admitted on another Ward.

The hospital immediately called the police as well as its security provider, Marksman, and a special investigating team attached to the company.

Mr. Moss-Solomon said the University Hospital considered the incident very serious. He added that it is not being viewed as a random act.

In addition, new regulations will require all visitors to the hospital to have valid identification before they can gain access to the wards, or any other sensitive area.
