No Zika-related case of Guillain-Barre syndrome, says Health Ministry

Jamaica's Ministry of Health has said it is encouraged by tests results in relation to the Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves and could lead to paralysis.

As the Ministry grapples with cases of the Zika virus, there have been concerns about the Guillain-Barre syndrome which has been associated with Zika.

Dr. Winston De La Haye, Acting Chief Medical Officer, said the ministry is yet to confirm anyone with Guillain-Barre who is also Zik-V positive.

"A total of eight persons are suspected, meaning they have symptoms which fit the criteria for Guillain-Barre and we've sent off samples for those to be tested. Three of those have come back negative and (we are awaiting the results) for the next five," he said.

Guillain-Barre often occurs after a viral or bacterial infection. There is no cure for Guillain-Barre, but most people eventually make a full recovery.
