NSWMA steps up enforcement and compliance initiatve in Portmore

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says last month, it prosecuted and issued warnings to several individuals and commercial operators for various offences as part of  its enforcement and compliance initiative in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Fifty two shops were visited, 15 were in compliance with the NSWMA Act having registered waste haulers removing their garbage.

The remaining 37 commercial operators showed no proof of how their solid waste was managed and were warned by the enforcement team.
The NSWMA says the team also issued removal notices to 292 persons who were found illegally depositing waste in public spaces.

In the Corporate Area, 33 persons were prosecuted for urinating in public spaces.
Bench warrants were issued for 69  who failed to turn-up for court.

The NSWMA says in the coming weeks, the enforcement team will be carrying out follow-up actions and closely monitor those in breach of  the NSWMA Act to ensure compliance.
