Parliament approves recommendations for harsher penalties for cybercrimes

Parliament on Tuesday approved a report presented by the Joint Select Committee which reviewed the Cyber Crime Act. The recommendations, among other things, include changes to the Act. The amendments seek harsher penalties for persons found guilty of cybercrimes. They will also make it easier for the authorities to prosecute persons.

Julian Robinson, State Minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, who chaired the committee, presented the report to Parliament.

“There is a consistency where we have increased - in the case of first offenders, second offenders and repeat offenders – we have made significant increases in both the fines and the terms of imprisonment. We believe that those penalties will now act as a deterrent for persons who may want to commit cyber-criminal activities,” said Mr. Robinson.

He explained that the amendments allow for the broad capturing of changes in technology and methods used by cyber criminals.
