Private sector to review campaign financing amid PNP funds scandal

With the People's National Party (PNP) reeling from allegations that some of its members pocketed funds donated to the organisation for the general election, the issue of campaign financing will come under scrutiny from powerful members of the private sector on Tuesday.

The issue is to be discussed at a special meeting of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ). Dennis Chung, Chief Executive Officer of the PSOJ said the group has always supported campaign finance reform and so it believes "it is the responsible thing for the PSOJ, and in particular, persons who publicly have declared their contributions to meet with us and give us their perspective on the whole matter."

Meanwhile, the PNP has declared that it will not make any further comment on the campaign funds scandal.

In a statement Monday evening, it said given the investigation by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG), the Integrity Commission of the party will suspend its planned probe into the matter.

PNP President Portia Simpson Miller, last Wednesday, asked the Integrity Commission to investigate the issues raised in a report from the party's Treasurer Norman Horne.

It is alleged that some PNP members did not hand over campaign funds donated ahead of the February 25 general election.

Allegations also surfaced that Chinese firms operating in Jamaica have been paying so called agent fees to political representatives.
